Latvian residents travelled less around Latvia, as well as abroad

In 2015, as compared to 2014, there was a decrease of 8.8 % in the amount of overnight trips of Latvian residents around Latvia, as well as abroad, said BC in the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) according to the latest data.

The total expenditures on domestic trips dropped by 5.6 % and on trips abroad – by 5.5 %. Whereas the average expenditures per one trip around Latvia reached EUR 40.4 and per one trip abroad – EUR 360.0.


Last year, 1.26 mln Latvian residents went on recreational trips, which is 0.4% less than in 2014. A lack of funds is the reason that prevents people from going on recreational trips most often, as this was indicated by 51.5% of Latvian residents who did not go on any overnight trips with at least one night outside of their usual place of residence during the previous year. The second most common reason was one's health condition or limited mobility, which was indicated by 19.9% of respondents in 2015.


n 2015, Latvian residents went on 7.7 mln domestic same-day trips, which is 5.4% less than in 2014, as well as on 0.5 mln same-day trips abroad, which is 1.4% less than the year before. As the number of trips decreased, there was a drop in the total expenditures on domestic same-day trips (of 2.4%), amounting to EUR 171.8 mln, as well as on same-day trips abroad (of 7.8%), amounting to EUR 23.7 mln. The average expenditures per one domestic trip grew by EUR 0.7, amounting to EUR 22.3, however, the average expenditures per one trip abroad decreased by EUR 3.5, amounting to EUR 49.7.

 

Compared to 2014, during the previous year the number of overnight trips decreased by 8.8% for both trips around Latvia, as well as trips abroad. Latvian residents went on 3.0 mln overnight trips within the territory of Latvia, as well as 1.2 mln overnight trips abroad. 40.5% of overnight trips were made to neighbouring countries (Lithuania, Estonia, Russia, and Belarus), and the amount thereof increased by 7.0% in comparison to 2014. Latvian residents went on most of their overnight trips to Lithuania (13.8%), Estonia (13.6%), Russia (9.7%), Sweden (6.0%), Germany (5.7%), United Kingdom (5.5%), Italy (5.1%), and France (4.5%).


Out of the 3.0 mln domestic overnight trips, the main destination of 41.0% of them was a city under state jurisdiction (Riga, Daugavpils, Jelgava, Jēkabpils, Jūrmala, Liepāja, Rēzekne, Valmiera or Ventspils), which is 5.4% more than in 2014. Latvian residents also indicated counties of Saulkrasti, Cēsis, Talsi, Kuldīga, Jelgava, Olaine, Alūksne, Sigulda, Limbaži, Bauska, Madona, Vecpiebalga, Daugavpils, Krāslava, Preiļi, Gulbene, Ventspils and Tukums as their destination.

 

As compared to 2014, in 2015 the amount of nights spent on trips around Latvia and trips abroad decreased by 22.6%. People spent 6.5 mln nights on trips around Latvia and 6.7 mln nights on trips abroad.

 

The average length of trips around Latvia was 2.2 days, which is 0.4 days less than in 2014, whereas the average amount of time spent on trips abroad was 5.4 days, which is 1.0 days less than during the previous year.

 

When on trips around Latvia, travellers spent 79.4% of nights at private accommodation (usually at the homes of relatives or friends), with the stay lasting for 2.1 days on average.

 

When on trips abroad, travellers spent 56.3% of nights at paid accommodation establishments, with the stay lasting for 4.4 days on average. When staying at private accommodation, the average stay of travellers lasted for 7.5 days.


The total expenditures on trips around Latvia amounted to EUR 120.0 mln, which is 5.6% less than in 2014. Average expenditures per trip amounted to EUR 40.4, which is EUR 1.4 more than in 2014, whereas the average expenditures per day amounted to EUR 18.4, which is EUR 3.3 more than in 2014. When on domestic trips, Latvian residents spent EUR 43.0 mln on transport, EUR 15.7 mln on accommodation, EUR 18.3 mln on food services, whereas other travel-related expenditures amounted to EUR 43.0 mln.


The total expenditures on overnight trips abroad amounted to EUR 447.0 mln, which is 5.5% less than in 2014. Latvian travellers spent 21.3% of the total expenditures at neighbouring countries. Average expenditures per trip amounted to EUR 360.0, which is EUR 12.8 more than in 2014, whereas the average expenditures per day amounted to EUR 66.7, which is EUR 12.1 more than in 2014. When on trips abroad, Latvian residents spent EUR 148.0 mln on transport, EUR 146.7 mln on accommodation, EUR 47.8 mln on food services, whereas other travel-related expenditures amounted to EUR 104.4 mln
