Riga Construction Board won’t perform independent examination of multi-story apartment building in Zolitude

BC, Riga, 12.11.2014.Print version
The Riga Construction Board's tender to select a company that would examine a multi-story building next to the Zolitude tragedy site has failed as none of the applicants was deemed to be competent enough, therefore the building will be inspected by experts commissioned by the building's owner, Homburg Zolitude, as the Construction Board's head Inguss Vircavs told LETA.

The Construction Board received two applications, however, both were turned down as neither of the applicants had performed inspection and examination of similar buildings during the past three years. The buildings that the two applicants had inspected were either smaller or with a smaller area, said Vircavs.

Therefore, inspection of the building will be done by experts hired by "Homburg Zolitude" by the end of this month. The results of the inspection will be evaluated by independent experts invited by the Riga Construction Board, said Vircavs.

The fate of the building depends on the said inspection's findings. If the building is deemed safe, the owner of the building will have to make the final decision on what to do with it. Relatives of those killed in the Zolitude tragedy believe that the building must be torn down and a memorial for the victims has to be built on the site.

As reported, 54 people died and scores were injured when a Maxima supermarket in Zolitude caved in on November 21, 2013.
