Estonia’s Tax board demands extra millions from construction companies

Explanations about labour taxes were asked from 3,276 persons working in the construction objects during 1,105 tax audits conducted in the first half of the tear; TCB inspected 258 construction objects.
Inspection department head Kaido Lemendik said that inspections of construction sphere companies have been considerably increased in the first half of this year and the results are reflected in the results of companies.
"The average payroll payment of the inspected companies has increased by over 14% as compared to the same period last year," said Lemendik, adding that the average payroll payment as recorded in tax declarations is still too low and does not reflect the real fees paid to construction workers.
Lemendik said that while the average wages declared by companies to TCB amount to around 600 euros a month, the Market Research Institute study of last year indicates that the average monthly wage to construction workers is 900 euros.
TCB estimates that the share of "illicit labour" in the construction sphere is around 23% versus 27% at the start of the year.
