As of this spring, Vilnius will have only five communities, the city's Council has decided today. As of April 1, only 5 of the present 21 community will be left – those furthest from the city centre.

Instead, 11 offices to serve the residents of the city will be established. Vilnius Mayor Arturas Zuokas says that the majority of residents do not know what are the functions of communities and do not use heir services, therefore, reorganisation could save money, informs LETA/ELTA.

"November poll revealed that as many as 60 percent of Vilnius residents do not know what communities do and 7 of 10 residents do not use their service. After the reorganisation, 11 offices will tackle the problems of city residents immediately after report; they will take better care of territories and ensure compliance with rule. What is more, the municipal budget will save around LTL 1.2 million (EUR 0.35 million) this year and vacate over 1,600 square meters of premises," Zuokas said.
