The government of Latvia today voted in support of the development of a piece of land belonging to Deputy Mayor of Riga Ainars Slesers (Latvia's First Party/Latvia's Way) and his wife, Saeima deputy Inese Slesere, at 1a Upes Street, Jurmala. The piece of land in question is within the Gulf of Riga coastal dune protection zone. Support was given to the development of a plot measuring 0.6627 hectares; 0.23 hectares smaller than was requested.

A majority of ministers voted for the development of the land, with only Environment Minister Raimonds Vejonis (Union of Greens and Farmers) and Defense Minister Imants Liegis (Civic Union) voting against. Finance Minister Einars Repse (New Era) abstained, informs LETA.

The plan foresees the development of forest land for a residential building and adjoining structures on land belonging to Slesers and his wife. Tree felling will be necessary as part of the building process.

As reported, in December the Cabinet of Ministers Committee did not support the building of a house and adjoining buildings on a land plot covering an area of 0.8975 hectares.

At that point, at the initiative of Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis (New Era), the plan did not proceed any further. The appropriate ministers were charged with assessing whether the felling of such a large number of trees – 76 – was permissible. From a legal point of view, the objections of the Jurmala Protection Society had to be taken into account.

Representatives of the Jurmala Protection Society held a demonstration against the development today outside the Cabinet of Ministers' building.
