Lithuanian banks' mortgage deferrals reach EUR 280 mln

Print versionLithuanian banks have deferred payments on mortgages worth over 280 million euros since the middle of March when the country's was put under quarantine, the Association of Lithuanian Banks told BNS, cites LETA.

In July, members of the association and other financial companies in the country extended the mortgage moratorium until September 30 to allow people financially affected by the COVID-19 crisis to defer payments without long procedures, interest rate and contract changes.
The moratorium was initiated in April and banks and other loan providers allowed their clients to defer mortgage payments for up to 12 months, and also defer payments on leasing and consumer loans for up to six months.
Figures from the central bank of Lithuania show that the total value of mortgages issued by all banks rose 189 million euros to 8.3 billion euros in the first quarter of this year, up 7.4 percent year-on-year.
