Number of run-down buildings in critical condition increasing in Riga

BC, Riga, 25.05.2016.Print version
The number of run-down buildings in Riga that pose threat to the public is increasing with each passing day, Riga Construction Board head Inguss Vircavs said in an interview with the LNT television today, reports LETA.

At the moment, 36 buildings in Riga are in severely critical condition. In 22 of these cases, the Construction Board has ordered the building to be sealed off, while the others are awaiting certified construction engineer's opinion.

These 36 buildings, however, are just the tip of the iceberg as there are about 100,000 buildings in Riga in total, said Vircavs.

Regardless of warnings, building owners do not always promptly repair them. Furthermore, if a building belongs to a private individual, the Riga Construction Board's rights are limited.

Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis (Greens/Farmers) later tells the television that he wants the government revise the law so the authorities could seize abandoned buildings or buildings that pose threat to the public if their owners do not do anything.
