Radins said that about EUR 12 million are needed to move the museum’s collections, arrange the new expositions. The expenses will be covered from the state budget, and the first expositions in the renovated premises will be opened in late 2018 or early 2019.

It is planned that the first exhibition will be opened in late 2018 and will be dedicated to Latvia’s centenary, but Radins was not ready to name the date yet.

At present the National History Museum is housed in temporary premises at 32 Brivibas Boulevard, displaying 10,000 exhibits in 30 rooms with a floor space of 2,500 square meters. When returning to the Riga Castle, the museum will have premises of about 6,000 square meters.

The renovation of the Riga Castle is planned in two phases. The first phase that began in 2009 has now been completed. The part of the castle to be used by the Latvian President’s Office was renovated during the first phase. The second phase of the renovation will last from 2016 to 2018. The part of the castle which was used by the National Museum of History will be renovated during the second phase and, when it is completed, the museum will return to its traditional place in the Riga Castle.
