Construction safety watchdog: Riga Circus should be shut down

BC, Riga, 08.02.2016.Print version
The Latvian National Construction Control Bureau (BVKB) still believes the Riga Circus building may collapse and should be shut down, said the bureau's director Peteris Drukis in an interview with commercial LNT television on Monday, informs LETA.

Drukis said that the construction safety watchdog will conduct additional inspection of the building, but he believes that the building has not seen any improvements.

"The building is leaning towards the street and the situation can be dangerous," Drukis said.

As reported, the construction safety watchdog has planned to repeatedly inspect the Riga Circus building in early February. If no improvements were made to the building by then, the watchdog will have to shut it down, Drukis said earlier.

The Riga Circus has been included in the list of dangerous structures. In September last year the construction safety watchdog allowed the circus to keep functioning only if certain restrictions were observed.

The Riga Circus was built in 1888 and is the oldest circus in the Baltic states. It has the status of a national architectural monument.
