The number of real estate units, which changed owners via purchase transactions in the first month of 2016 in Lithuania, increased by nearly one-fifth in year-on-year terms, which gives grounds to expect stronger activity in Lithuania’s real estate market in 2016, the Center of Registers has said, cites LETA/BNS.

According to preliminary data, 7,150 real estate units, including land plots, buildings and premises, changed hands via purchase transactions in January, a rise of 19% from the same period last year.

“Traditionally, the beginning of the year in the real estate market is calm and activity builds up by the middle of the year. January results are well ahead of the beginning of 2015 and are one of the best since 2008. Even though the beginning does not match up to strong December activity, it is sufficiently strong and it lets expect stronger activity throughout this year,” the Center of Registers said in a press release on Wednesday.

A total of 2,099 apartments and 553 single-family houses were sold in Lithuania in January, up 33.5% and 13.8%, respectively, from the same period last year. As compared to December, apartment sales fell by 19.6% while the sales of single-family houses plunged by 24.8%.

The number of land parcels sold in January increased by an annual 13.6% but fell by a monthly 34.9% to 3,470.
