''The erection of a monumental flag in one of the crossroads areas of Riga will be an excellent gift to Latvia on its 100-year anniversary. Residents will be able to proudly look across the Daugava River from Old Town and view our nation's most important symbol waving high in the sky,'' MP Rihards Kols, one of the initiators of the project, said today, while expressing joy at the city council's decision to cooperate on the project.

Work on constructing the flag post is expected to begin in 2016, and is expected to be completed by the end of next year. After the flagpole will be ready, it will pass into the ownership of the city that will service it.

At the end of 2014, online voting was billed three places in Riga, where the flag can be placed. With the majority of votes (3983), residents choose the most appropriate  place the jetty AB. After the voting the serious research and technical work were conducted. Designed by architects sketch suggests that the height of the flagpole will reach 60 meters, and the size of the flag is 20 by 10 meters.
