Lithuanian Seimas hotel to be protected by VIP Protection Department

On October 5th, the Government of Lithuania reached a preliminary agreement to transfer the protection of the Seimas Hotel building to the VIP Protection Department (VAD) instead of another institution under the Interior Ministry, informs LETA/ELTA.

According to Interior Minister Saulius Skvernelis, the Seimas building and the Seimas Hotel should be understood as a single complex whose protection should be ensured by the same institution – the VAD.

 

"71 MPs live in the Seimas Hotel and, in the event of any threats to this building or other disruptions of its operation, parliament would not be able to convene and perform their functions," the interior minister told reporters.

 

In his opinion, the VAD should ensure not only external protection of the object but also monitor who gets inside the Seimas Hotel building.

 

"It is essential to have a serious entrance control system in this object. Those who enter the building should be checked in the same way as in the parliament building," Minister Skvernelis believes.
