Latvian Health Minister sees no reason to turn to law enforcement institutions regarding Stradins Hospital

Latvian Health Minister Guntis Belevics (Greens/Farmers) presently sees no reason to turn to the law enforcement authorities over problems with construction of the new wing at Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital, reports LETA.

Belevics said in an interview with the Latvian Television show "Rita panorama" this morning that "at the moment, there is no reason to turn to the law enforcement institutions." He explained that, knowing the history of the construction of the hospital's entire new wing, and being aware of when and under what financial circumstances the contracts were signed, there is no reason for turning to the prosecutor's office.

"I do not believe that only because [former hospital's head Dins] Smits was unable to reach an agreement with the construction company for a year we should turn to the Prosecutor General's Office. The fact that the project was not properly supervised from the very beginning, and that the funds were not initially granted, [..] is true," Belevics admitted, repeatedly stating that this information is not sufficient to turn to the authorities.

The minister tends to believe that the hospital's board is to blame, as it was aware of the lack of funds when it signed the contract. "We will draw up a report, and I will inform the prime minister about the historical aspects of the situation," the minister explained.

Belevics also said that former Health Ministry's State Secretary Rinalds Mucins was "constantly present" during the implementation of the project. "If someone has to take responsibility, then it must be Mr. Mucins, however, [..] there is no information based on which we could turn to the Prosecutor General's office," Belevics said.
