Estonian construction businessman starts hunger strike in Helsinki

BC, Tallinn, 16.12.2014.Print version
Estonian construction businessman Rain Kolga began a hunger strike in Helsinki to protest against the harassment of officials, Postimees Online cites Helsingin Sanomat.

Kolga said that the officials of Finnish regional monitoring agency Aluehallintovirasto (Avi) have since September visited the building site of Kolga’s business three times and made injunctions, which the businessman says are incorrect, reports LETA.

Kolga’s lawyer has contacted the police, asking to investigate whether Avi officer has violated his official duties or acted in a racist way.

Avi said that the agency conducts 10,000 inspections in southern Finland alone, and 30 protests have been submitted against their activities. Avi’s labour protection department head Kaarina Myyri-Partanen said that foreign builders are monitored in exactly the same way as local ones.

Kolga said he began the hunger strike last Monday and has since lost about ten kg. “I will end it on one of two cases: either the police launches preliminary investigation or Avi withdraws all the unfounded claims," he told the newspaper.
