Latvian AgriMin: EU Commission's EUR 7.7 will be given to dairy producing companies only

BC, Riga, 25.11.2014.Print version
The European Commission's EUR 7.7 million support package will be granted only to those dairy farms that provide produce, while the compensation issuing criteria will be drawn up already during the coming weeks, Agriculture Minister Janis Duklavs (Greens/Farmers) told LETA after meeting with farmers' organizations yesterday.

"This money is not meant for dairy processing companies, it will go only to dairy producing companies. The ministry's task is to draw up the necessary Cabinet of Ministers' regulations that include criteria according to which the money will be funneled to all the registered farms that produce milk," the minister said.

Duklavs also said that an official decision from Brussels in regard to some aspects of the support mechanism is to be expected at the end of this week.

"A regulation, which ensures emergency support, will be passed this week; we received such a signal from Brussels," Duklavs said.

When asked whether other agricultural industries suffering from Russia's embargo will be able to receive similar support packages, Duklavs gave an affirmative answer.

"The government will review the EUR 2.5 million support opportunity for pig-breeders. Tomorrow's agenda also includes support for grain cultivators," Duklavs said.

Meanwhile, representatives of farmers' organizations told LETA that they are satisfied with the current state support, as well as the ministry's reaction in regard to the new EU support, however, they have not given up their intentions to participate in a protest campaign organized by Baltic farmers' organizations in Brussels this coming December.
