Lithuania to allocate revenues from excise duty on manufactured tobacco for prevention

The Seimas of Lithuania had decided to allocate 2% of revenues from excise duty on manufactured tobacco to the Programme for the Prevention of Use of Psychoactive Substances (Inter-institutional Action Plan) approved by the Government, the Seimas press service said, cites LETA/ELTA.

The initiators of the amendments said it would account for approximately LTL 14 million (EUR 4 million) of the state budget. The new amendments to the Law on Tobacco Control received 66 votes in favour, with no votes against and 3 abstentions.

 

The funds from the Programme could be used to finance the prevention of use of psychoactive substances, namely, prevention programmes, projects, research, social advertising, and other relevant activities.

 

The adopted amendments will enter into force on 1 January of 2015. Therefore, the Government will have to adopt the implementing legislation by the end of the year.
