BC, Tallinn, 21.11.2014.Print version
The Estonian government discussed at its Thursday evening cabinet meeting the establishment of a Russian-language TV program, and gave its support to it; to make the final decision, the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Culture need to find financing sources for around EUR 4 million per year, LETA/Pubic Broadcasting reports.

According to the plan, submitted by the Ministry of Culture and Public Broadcasting Company, creation of the channel is based on the principle that all social groups have to be able to benefit from a high-quality and balanced programme that reflects the everyday life and culture of Estonia. The new channel will be independent, self-directed, and mainly targeted at Russian-speaking audience.

Minister of Culture Urve Tiidus said that the expectations for the Russian-speaking TV channel exist. Studies show that 66% of the local Russian-speaking residents are ready to have a new TV channel.

According to the minister, TV viewers are waiting for the new channel to offer a full-scale programme, which is targeted at different interest groups and consisting of, among other things, educational information and entertainment.
