Riga Court unfreezes assets of Ir magazine's publisher

BC, Riga, 21.11.2014.Print version
The Riga Regional Court today ruled in favor of Cits medijs (publisher of the magazine Ir) for the court to annul a guarantee claim against the company requested by insolvency administrator Maris Spruds, thus, the publisher's EUR 22,979 worth of assets have been unfrozen.

As LETA was informed by court spokeswoman Inta Saboha, the court has overruled the Riga Central District Court's September 12 ruling, which rejected the claim by Cits medijs to unfreeze the company's assets.

The court's ruling cannot be appealed.

As reported, this past July, the Riga Central District Court decided to freeze the assets of Cits medijs in the amount of EUR 22,979 following a petition filed by controversial insolvency administrator Maris Spruds.

The decision was made in a legal dispute between Spruds and Ir over a series of investigative articles printed by the magazine, and Spruds claiming compensation for defamation of character.

The articles printed in the Ir magazine about various illegalities during insolvency processes caused a public outrage and triggered counteraction by several insolvency administrators – besides Spruds, former insolvency administrator Aigars Lusis, who is now one of the leaders of All for Latvia!-For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK, has also sued Ir for libel.
