The Latvian government has decided to allot EUR 48,898 to several municipalities in order to cover the costs of measures taken against African swine fever, informs LETA.

The funding will be allotted to 14 municipalities in Aglona, Beverina, Burtnieki, Dagda, Daugavpils, Ludza, Naukseni, Preili, Priekuli, Rauna, Rezekne, Rujiena, Smiltene, and Valka regions.

Funding for each municipality will range between EUR 1,042 and EUR 11,944. The largest sum – EUR 11,944 – will be allotted to Dagda Region municipality, the lowest – EUR 104 – to Beverina Region municipality.

The allotted funds will be used to build animal utilization areas, purchase various auxiliary materials and instruments, employ workers, purchase firewood, and to pay for transport services.

African swine fever was detected in Latvia on June 26, in the carcasses of three dead wild boars found just a few meters from the Belarusian border.

As reported, taking into account that new cases of African swine fever are regularly discovered in Latvia, the government decided to expand the emergency zone almost up to Riga, as well as to extend the emergency period to January 1, 2015.
