EU pig-breeders demand compensation due to Russia's embargo

BC, Riga, 28.10.2014.Print version
European Union (EU) pig-breeders are unsatisfied with the support mechanisms designed for industries affected by Russia's embargo against food products from the EU, thus, Brussels will request adding pork producers on the compensation list, Pig-breeders Association of Latvia Director Dzintra Lejniece informed the business portal Nozare.lv.

She indicated that European agricultural organization "Copa-Cogeca" expressed dissatisfaction with the current support system designed for companies suffering from the embargo, writes LETA.

"There was a deep misunderstanding about why the current discussions focus on support for fruit, vegetable, and dairy producers, while pork producers are forgotten, despite the fact that the amount of direct and indirect losses is huge. Several member states indicated that the amount of losses in October was EUR 10 per pig, with a tendency to grow. Furthermore, we said that in Latvia this figure has reached already EUR 20 per pig," Lejniece said.

EU pig-breeders have also stressed that meat procurement prices continue to fall due an over-saturated market, while fodder prices continue to grow.

Pig-breeders Association of Latvia previously indicated that Latvian pig-breeders faced EUR 1 million losses in October.
