"The abundance of several fish species is so big that very steep cuts in fishing opportunities are neither justified nor necessary," explained Pentus-Rosimannus who participates in the European Union's Fisheries Council meeting commencing today in Luxembourg.
While the European Commission wants to cut sprat fishing rights by 17%, Estonia thinks the cut could be by 10%.
The European Commission has also proposed to reduce the Gulf of Finland salmon fishing quota by 23%, but Estonia's position is that the abundance of salmon allows not cutting the fishing quota in the coming year at all.
