BC, Riga, 23.09.2014.Print version
Taking into account that new cases of African swine fever are regularly discovered in Latvia, the government plans to expand the emergency zone almost up to Riga, reports LETA/Nozare.lv.

The government will also decide today whether to extend the emergency period to January 1, 2015.

The government also plans to expand the emergency territory by including additional 17 regions – Aizkraukle, Ikskile, Incukalns, Kegums, Krimulda, Lielvarde, Ligatne, Limbazi, Malpils, Nereta, Pargauja, Ropazi, Salacgriva, Seja, Sigulda, Skriveri, and Vecumnieki, as well as all the Ogre and Jaunjelgava regions.

As reported, on August 13, Saeima passed amendments to the regulations issued by the Cabinet of Ministers, which stipulate expansion of the African swine fever emergency zone. Thus, the state of emergency was declared in 21 regions in Latvia – Varkava, Livani, Vilani, Cesis, Amata, Vecpiebalga, Jaunpiebalga, Gulbene, Cesvaine, Ergli, Madona, Lubana, Koknese, Plavinas, Krustpils, Varaklani, Sala, Viesite, Jekabpils, Akniste and Ilukste regions.

African swine fever has been found in 100 wild boars and 72 domestic pigs so far.

The disease was first confirmed in Latvia on June 26, in the carcasses of three dead wild boars found just a few meters from the Belarusian border.
