Latvian healthcare may be funded using state funds and social insurance

BC, Riga, 05.09.2014.Print version
During the strategic council meeting for healthcare yesterday, the government of Latvia decided to approve the proposal to allot funding for the healthcare field using two sources – the state budget and social insurance payments, informs LETA.

The new funding model, proposed by a special task force of professionals, stipulates that the majority of funding will come from the state budget, while the rest – from social insurance, the head of the task force, Ilze Vinkele (Unity), told the press representatives.

If such a model is supported by the field representatives and politicians, the healthcare field could receive 1.5% from social insurance payments already in 2015. In three or four years, the figure could reach 2.5 – 3%. The implementation of such model would provide about EUR 31 million into the health budget. In four years, this figure could be EUR 160 million.

The tax burden will not increase, but the quality of services will grow.
