Negotiations between health care professionals and hospitals in Estonia without progress

BC, Tallinn, 01.09.2014.Print version
Negotiations between health care professionals’ organisations and the Association of Hospitals are proceeding with great difficulties as parties find it difficult to find common ground, writes LETA/Postimees Online.

The new obstacle for the talks is the fact that the Supervisory Board of the Health Insurance Fund reduced the planned medical insurance tax revenue and decided that in the next two years, the undivided earnings of the fund would not be used for medical aid.

Thus far the Association of Hospitals has only made a pay proposal to the Estonian Medical Association. Representative of the latter Urmas Sule said that the proposal was based on the budgetary outlook. The Medical Association did not find the proposal acceptable and have noted that in comparison with the pay demands during the time of the strike in 2012, the demands have been reduced significantly. Now the Medical Association demands that minimum pay for medical doctors would be 9.50 euros per hour and from the year 2016 11 euros per hour.

Katrin Rehemaa, the Secretary General of the Medical Association, said that their objective is to proceed with peaceful talks, but they would not rule out the need to use some measures to apply pressure on the other side.

Negotiations between medical professionals and hospitals will continue on September 15.
