BC, Riga, 22.08.2014.Print version
The next government of Latvia will have to additionally allot at least EUR 40 million to the healthcare sector in 2015, Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) told the press representatives yesterday, cites LETA.

Straujuma is confident that the law must stipulate higher funding for healthcare and defense. "We cannot step back any further," she said, adding that residents are expecting improvements in healthcare.

She also indicated that the additional EUR 5.5 million promised for healthcare have already been agreed upon and will be allotted next week.

Straujuma went on to say that healthcare should have its budget increased to 4.5 – 5% of gross domestic product by 2020.

Meanwhile, the Latvian Association of General Practitioners indicated that, although they have a high opinion of Straujuma's initiative to allot additional EUR 40 million for healthcare, the sum should be larger still.
