New African swine fever cases in Ludza and Valka regions

BC, Riga, 12.08.2014.Print version
African swine fever continues to spread in Latvia – the virus has also been confirmed in wild boars hunted in Ludza Region's Cirma County and a dead wild boar found in Ergeme County, Valka Region, writes LETA.

The Food and Veterinary Service has received the results of the latest laboratory analyses, which confirmed the presence of African swine fever in two wild boars hunted in Ludza Region's Cirme County and a dead wild boar found in Valka Region's Ergeme County, as the service's representative Anna Joffe told LETA.

Two dead wild boars found in Madona Region's Laudona County last weekend had also died of African swine fever.

The Food and Veterinary Service was also informed yesterday that African swine fever had been confirmed in Poland, on a farm 13 kilometers from the border with Belarus, and a wild boar was found dead in Lithuania's Ignalina Region, that had also been killed by African swine fever.

The Food and Veterinary Service is urging farmers to pay extra attention to crops being harvested to ensure that wild boars have not been there, this especially concerns pea, potato and cornfields.

If farmers come upon any dead wild boars they are requested to promptly notify the Food and Veterinary Service.
