Latvia allots EUR 1.5 mln to compensate pig breeders for losses caused by African swine fever

BC, Riga, 15.07.2014.Print version
In order to provide pig breeders with compensation for pigs slaughtered due to African swine fever, the government has allotted EUR 1.5 million for the Ministry of Agriculture from the state budget's emergency funds, informs LETA/Nozare.lv.

The amount of compensation payments ranges from EUR 25 to EUR 115 per pig, depending on the age and type of every given animal.

The government also plans on implementing a number of measures within the area hit by African swine fever. For example, pig enclosures need to be closed, regularly cleaned and disinfected.

If pig owners fail to follow these requirements until July 22, 2014, all pigs that are kept within the enclosures will have to be killed by August 31.

After the pigs are slaughtered, the owners will be prohibited from keeping pigs for at least one year, after which they will be eligible to receive compensation payments.

The government also ordered the Ministry of Agriculture to turn to the European Commission to request partial compensation of the budget funds spent on compensating farmers for their losses.

As reported, African swine fever was registered in Latvia on June 26.

The Food and Veterinary Service has inspected a total of 3,776 farms in the infected area, 564 of which keep pigs. The total number of domestic pigs in the area is 2,186.

A total of 1,444 blood samples have been collected for laboratory tests. Inspectors have also registered 323 cases of various violations, including unreported animals and illegal transportation of pigs.
