The Minister of Agriculture Martins Roze (Union of Greens and Farmers) will hand in his resignation to the Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis (Latvia's First Party/Latvia's Way) today.

Martins Roze.

Roze took the decision to resign after the rallying farmers repeatedly demanded it yesterday.

Last night, in an interview on Latvian State Television's broadcast "100. pants" (100th article), Roze revealed that he had received "indirect threats", thus one of the reasons for resignation is to ensure that himself and his family are safe.

Farmers on their agriculture machinery left the vicinity of the Agriculture Ministry only late at night yesterday, after the Vice-Chair of the "Farmers' Saeima" Association Maria Dzelzkaleja announced that Roze had informed in a telephone conversation about his decision to resign.

After yesterday's government meeting, the prime minister confirmed that Roze had informed him about his resignation plans.

The prime minister commented that Roze made "a manly decision".

Participants of the yesterday's rally pointed out that Roze's resignation is just the first step towards resolving the accrued problems in agriculture sector.
