Latvian prosecutor demands harshest penalties in so-called digital TV affair

In the so-called digital television affair, Prosecutor Edvins Piliksers has demanded the harshest penalty be handed down to political consultant and former head of the People's Party leader Andris Skele's bureau Jurgis Liepnieks – a five year prison sentence, as well as a fine of at least 170 minimum monthly salaries or EUR 54,400, informs LETA.

At the same time, Piliksers has also demanded five-year prison sentences and fines handed down to the accused – Andrejs Zabeckis and Harijs Krongorns.

 

There are currently 19 persons charged in the criminal case, which was originally started on August 28, 2008.

 

The prosecutor also demanded smaller prison sentences and fines to be handed down to Guntars Spunde, Uldis Kokins, Juris Ulmanis, Janis Svarpstons and Janis Loze.

 

Meanwhile, the prosecutor demanded fines for the remaining persons charged in the case.

 

As reported, the agreement between the Digital Latvian Radio and Television Center (DLRTC) and the off-shore company Kempmayer Media Limited envisaged the introduction of digital television in Latvia in several stages and shipping various equipment for digital broadcasts to Latvia. The total cost of the project was projected in the tens of millions of lats.

 

An investigation was launched regarding the digital television project and a criminal process was opened according to the Criminal Law's Section 317 – exceeding official authority, the Criminal Law's Section 319 – failure to act by a state official, the Criminal Law's Section 177 – fraud and the Criminal Law's Section 195 – legalizing illegally-acquired funds.
