Estonian Riigikogu adopts new pharmacy act

On Wednesday, the Estonian Riigikogu approved of a law according to which the general pharmacy operating license cannot be issued to medicines wholesale companies nor companies connected to them via dominant influence, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

The law also prescribes that a temporary restriction will be enforced in settlements with a population of 4,000 or more, according to which a new pharmacy can be opened there only at the proposal of the local municipality and approval of the Pharmaceuticals Board till June 9, 2015. In regions where demand is low, there are no restrictions for opening pharmacies.

 

Branch pharmacies can be established in the future only in rural areas and in smaller towns with a population of less than 4,000 inhabitants.

 

The law has provisions relating to considering pharmacists as healthcare workers, establishment of a pharmacy buses, payment of start-up support to pharmacists to work in rural areas and simplification of opening of pharmacies in small islands.
