Zdanoka critisizes the violation of freedom of expression in Latvia and Lithuania

BC, Riga, 15.04.2014.Print version
Since last Monday translation of several Russian TV channels in the territory of my country, Latvia, as well as of neighbouring Lithuania is stopped for 3 months according to decision of the appropriate supervision bodies, said Tatjana Zdanoka at the EU Parliament.

The cause was the discontent with covering of the Ukrainian events by these channels.

This case is an evident violation of Article 11 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights saying that

"Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers. The freedom and pluralism of the media shall be respected".

In Latvia, the decision has been contested before the court. I hope very much that the "third power" will stop the violation of our Constitution and the Charter.

Estimates of events in Ukraine differ very much. But all the positions have the right to be stated and heard.
