Referendum on land sale in Lithuania to take place on 29th June

BC, Vilnius, 10.04.2014.Print version
On Thursday the Parliament decided that the referendum on the sale of land to foreigners will take place on 29 June. However, the issue might still be addressed by the Constitutional Court, informs LETA/ELTA.

The parliament had earlier approved a proposal put forward by the conservatives Jurgis Razma and Stasys Sedbaras, and the liberals Eligijus Masiulis and Gintaras Steponavicius to address the Constitutional Court asking to clarify whether the legal regulation when the lawmakers are not granted the right to decide on announcing the referendum does not contradict the Constitution.

As reported, Lithuania committed to enable foreigners to purchase land when it sign the European Union accession agreement. A seven year transition period was granted, under which land sale prohibition was valid until May 2011. Later, Lithuania agreed with the European Commission to extend the period to May 2014.
