BC, Riga, 02.04.2014.Print version
The head of the Food and Veterinary Service Maris Balodis told the LNT television channel this morning that the African swine fever threat level is very high in Latvia, informs LETA.

Balodis reminded that an outbreak in Latvia not been established at the moment, but that there have been two confirmed cases in both Lithuania and Poland, and such outbreaks are common in Russia and Belarus.

The head of the Food and Veterinary Service also said that Latvia's population of wild boars, which is at around 70,000 at the moment, is too large, thus hunters should be allowed to hunt a greater number of these animals.

As reported, this past February, the Latvian government allocated a total of EUR 1,352,949 from the state budget's emergency funds to the Finance Ministry, the Agriculture Ministry and the Interior Ministry for African swine fever prevention measures.

African swine fever has never been registered in the territory of Latvia.

The Agriculture Ministry received information regarding the outbreak of African swine fever in southern Lithuania on January 24.
