Group on Media Freedom and Pluralism in Europe, chaired by Vike-Freiberga, presents its final report

Yesterday, the High Level Group on Media Freedom and Pluralism in Europe, chaired by Latvia’s ex-President Vaira Vike-Freiberga, officially submitting its final report to European Commissioner for Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes, LETA was informed by Vike-Freiberga's press secretary Daina Lasmane.

The report includes recommendations for the respect, protection, support and promotion of pluralism and freedom of the media in Europe.

 

Kroes said she was pleased with the report that she had already acquainted herself with before the meeting. Kroes will discuss the report with her European Commission colleagues and will use it for argumentation when moving forward her competence matters, since media freedom and pluralism are among the most topical matters on the commissioner's agenda.

 

The meeting was followed by a joint press conference by Kroes, Vike-Freiberga and the group's member, former German Justice Minister Herta Daubler-Gmelin.

 

Vike-Freiberga and Daubler-Gmelin also presented the report to the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE). The committee lauded the report and congratulated its authors on their achievement. The sides also concluded that the report corresponds to the committee's thoughts on the importance of media influence in Europe.

 

The group was established in October 2011 by Kroes, Vike-Freiberga chaired the group. The other group members are professor Herta Daubler-Gmelin, professor Luis Miguel Poiares Pessoa Maduro and Ben Hammersley.
