Riigikogu approves of a statement for fair EU agriculture policy

The Estonian Riigikogu approved of a statement that demands solidarity in agricultural support in the European Union to create equal competitive conditions at the European domestic market, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

The statement stresses that the focal issue of the EU common agricultural policy (CAP) in the future will be creating equal competitive conditions at the EU domestic market via reforming and harmonising direct subsidies.

For this, the Riigikogu calls EU member states, the European Parliament and European Commission to implement such a direct subsidies' system of CAP that would guarantee equal competitive conditions to all EU agricultural producers.

The statement also stresses the need to adopt a new methodology of calculating direct subsidies in the new EU financial period that would enable to avoid major differences between the highest and lowest levels of direct subsidies and that would take into account the economic and environmental criteria.
