Despite the protests from Latvia's beverage producers at today's Cabinet meeting, the government gave its approval for amendments to the law on excise tax which is to increase the rate for non-alcoholic beverages from LVL 4 to LVL 5.2 per 100 liters.

As a result, the return from excise tax will increase 30%, and, according to government estimates, the 2011 budget will be padded with LVL 1 million, writes LETA.

The new rate will not pertain to fruit and vegetable juices or nectar.

The amendments (handed in by the Finance Ministry) also call for a lifting of the reduced rate and in the future, fuel with 5% bio-fuel additive, will have the standard excise rate: for non-lead fuel – LVL 269 per 1,000 liters, for diesel fuel – LVL 234 per 1,000 liters.
