Skele: digital television criminal case in Latvia is too politicized

Nina Kolyako, BC, Riga, 02.09.2010.Print version
The digital television criminal case is too politicized, said People's Party leader Andris Skele today during his first appearance as a witness in the case. He revealed that he did not envy the court that would have to pass judgement on the case. Skele said that too much time had gone past for him to be able to remember the events clearly.

He requested that Prosecutor Edvins Piliksers ask him precise questions, as he himself was not able to provide testimony on the matters under examination in the case.

Skele was asked questions in connection with the project for the introduction of digital television, about his relationships with Jurgis Liepnieks and lawyer Janis Loze, and about the offer by LNT television director Andrejs Ekis. Liepnieks, Loze and Ekis all stand accused in this criminal investigation, informs LETA.

According to Skele, he initially related to Liepnieks' information about the digital television project with caution, as he did not understand its scale. Skele also indicated that he had had a business relationship with Liepnieks and that several discussions had taken place between the two, as Liepnieks was a great enthusiast for the project, and that he had also been involved with a foreign client. Skele allowed the possibility that this had been Kempmeyer Media Limited.

As reported, in June this year, Riga District Court decided to satisfy the request of Prosecutor Edvins Piliksers and call three witnesses to attend forthcoming sessions of the court as it continues to examine the so-called digital television affair, including Skele.

The prosecutor made his request after the court satisfied another request concerning the adding of further documents to the materials involved in the proceedings.

As reported, the documents concerned indicate that one of the beneficiaries of the offshore company Kempmeyer Media Limited, which once received several million orders for the installation of digital television, was politician Andris Skele's family – his daughters and ex-wife.
