Due to export tariffs levied by Russia and railway transport problems in the Eastern direction, the import of round timber from Russia to Estonia has fallen by 70 times in recent years, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

Estonian Forest Industry Association CEO Ott Otsmann said that in 2006, the import level was 1.7 million cubic metres of round timber and in 2009 it was 24,000 cubic metres.

On Tuesday, a round table meeting of the Estonian foreign ministry and Forest Industry Association took place on the Russian round timber export customs tariffs issue. The foreign ministry will send the resulting positions to the European Commission.

Namely Russia is holding negotiations with the European Commission on that topic, connected to the wish of Russia to join the World Trade Organisation.

“The customs tariffs seem to be more a political than economic issue for Russians,” said Otsmann. “Now Russia shows willingness to agree upon the tariffs at some level with Europe.”
