While most member states of the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA) are reporting a stabilization of their epidemiological situation, Covid-19 incidence in the Baltic states is still on the rise, Jurijs Perevoscikovs, head of the Disease Risk Analysis and Prevention Department at the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), said LETA/BNS cites.

"As recently as two weeks ago, only 12 countries reported stabilization or a drop in cases, but last week the list of such countries had grown to 24 already," the epidemiologist said.

At present, Covid-19 incidence continues to grow in five EU and EEA countries: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal and Sweden.

Meanwhile, in the rest of EU and EEA countries, as well as in the UK, the situation is stabilizing, with cases even dropping in several of these countries, Perevoscikovs said, attributing the positive trend to the effect of the lockdowns and other safety measures introduced in these countries.

According to the latest data from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Latvia's cumulative two-week Covid-19 incidence is now 352.77 cases per 100,000 population. In Lithuania, the cumulative two-week number of Covid-19 cases is 992.96 per 100,000 population and in Estonia 336.95 cases per 100,000 population.
