Latvian Government appoints Juris Gaikis head of Competition Council

The Cabinet of Ministers on Tuesday appointed Juris Gaikis, head of the State Medical Commission for the Assessment of Health Condition and Working Ability and former head of the State Revenue Service's Tax Board, as the new head of the Competition Council, LETA informs.

Addressing the ministers, Gaikis said that his past professional experience would help him successfully run the Competition Council.


According to the Economics Ministry, Gaikis was selected as the best candidate for the position, taking into consideration his experience and past achievements in optimization of procedures at the organizations he was heading, improving services' quality, development of motivation and development policies.


"Gaikis has precisely defined the main areas of the Competition Council's operations, the main challenges and solutions thereof. References describe him as a very goal-oriented manager who acts fast and decisively," said the Economics Ministry.


According to LETA archives, Gaikis has Master's degree in law from the University of Latvia. He served as the head of the Revenue Service's Tax Board from 2001 to 2017.


As reported, former Competition Council head Skaidrite Abrama said at the beginning of this year that she would step down in April. Abrama was appointed head of the Competition Council in June 2012. She was approved for a second term in the office in 2017.
