Citing the need to protect people's health, Estonia's state-owned energy company Eesti Energia decided on Friday morning to halt the operation of the Estonia oil shale mine in northeastern Estonia for one week following a disclosure that 12 miners working at the mine had been diagnosed with coronavirus, reported LETA/BNS.

Altogether 18 workers of the Estonia mine were tested. The tests of 12 of the miners returned a positive result and the tests of six miners a negative result.

Andres Vainola, manager of Enefit Kaevandused, said that people's health was the main consideration in all their decisions.

"As a precautionary measure, we will direct all workers of Eesti Energia in East-Viru County, whose nature of work allows for it, to work from home," Vainola said, adding that also all the precautionary measures for the containment of the spread of the virus applied during the emergency situation in spring will be reintroduced.

Oil shale logistics will continue to work, meaning that there is no risk to the security of supply or the provision of the vital service. The oil plants and power stations are supplied with fuel.

After one employee of the Estonia mine tested positive for the virus on Aug. 19, the company identified 17 contacts of said person and referred them to testing. The company is currently working to identify all other contacts of the infected employees and will refer also these employees to testing.

The discontinuation of the operation of the Estonia mine affects more than 700 people at Eesti Energia and partner companies.

On the basis of available information, Eesti Energia will decide about subsequent steps next week.
