Latvian army plans to cease joint patrols on eastern border

BC, Riga, 06.07.2020.Print version
After July 9, the army no longer plans to continue participating in join patrols on the eastern border together with border guards, Minister of Defense Artis Pabriks (For Development) told LETA.

He noted that the current situation is not that complicated for the National Guard to continue to participate in the surveillance of the country's eastern border. It should also be taken into account that the Home Guards are not soldiers of the professional service and they have to earn a living on a daily basis in their civilian professions, said Pabriks.

"If the situation worsens in the future, we will definitely get involved again," the minister added.

As reported, the government had previously approved extending military support to the State Border Guard until 9 July, based on an assessment of the epidemiological situation in Russia and Belarus, risk analysis and information on the sharp rise in illegal immigration after the emergency.

Each day, 60 soldiers and Home Guards, as well as up to 15 vehicles, are involved in providing support on the border with Russia and Belarus.
