The city council of Daugavpils at an extraordinary meeting today elected Igors Prelatovs (Our Party) the city's new mayor, reported LETA/BNS.

Prelatovs was elected Daugavpils mayor by 11 votes. Deposed mayor Andrejs Elksnins (Harmony) did not take part in the vote.

Councilor Livija Jankovska (Our Party), who had nominated Prelatovs for the mayoral office, was elected the new mayor's deputy by 11 votes. Jankovska became the city's third vice-mayor, the first two being Janis Lacplesis (Latgale Party) and Janis Duksinskis (Latgale Party).

Until March 12 this year Prelatovs served as Daugavpils vice-mayor, but he resigned from this post to avoid speculations of a possible conflict of interest.

As reported, the Daugavpils city council at its June 11 meeting, at the request of Latgale Party and Our Party, voted to dismiss Andrejs Elksnins (Harmony) as Daugavpils mayor.

The request for the vote was submitted by eight lawmakers, nine lawmakers supported it in the vote, four voted against, and two did not vote.

Aivars Broks (Latgale Party) criticized Elksnins for mobbing and moral terrorism, lack of loyalty towards Daugavpils and the Latvian state.

Lawmakers of Latgale party, so far being in the coalition with Harmony, and two Our Party lawmakers had signed a call on no-confidence vote in Elksnins.

"We know god governance principles, but cooperation with Harmony was impossible. Elksnins is making decisions unilaterally, making his own PR," said Helena Soldatjonoka (Latgale Party).

The call to vote against Elksnins was signed by eight of the council's 15 lawmakers.

Soldatjonoka said that the most appropriate candidate for the mayor is Janis Lacplesis (Latgale Party).
