Latvia: Road construction procurement prices have decreased 20% on average

BC, Riga, 29.04.2020.Print version
Road construction procurement prices have decreased by 20% on the average, state road maintenance company Latvijas Valsts Celi (LVC) chairman of the board Janis Lange said in an interview with Latvian Radio.

This means that more highways and roads will be repaired than LVC had originally planned, said Lange.

Commenting on the government's decision on Tuesday, April 28, to additionally allocate from the contingency funds up to EUR 75 mln to road infrastructure projects, Lange said that these funds would mostly go to roads and highways with heavier traffic.

These include Daugavpils Highway section from Livani to Daugavpils and further on to the border, several sections of the Riga-Sigulda Highway, as well as several sections of Valmiera Highway between Valmiera and Valka. 30 different sections of regional roads will also be reconstructed.

Implementation of these projects could start in July and August, Lange added.

"For road construction companies, this will be an active season with lots of work," said Lange.

As reported, in order to promote economic recovery during the Covid-19 crisis, the government has decided to allocate up to 75 million for road infrastructure projects.

Transport Minister spokeswoman Ilze Salna told LETA that the funds will be used to renew road surface of about 500 kilometers and renovate several bridges.

About 50 road construction projects will be selected, assessing a number of criteria, including the technical condition, traffic intensity and others.
