Estonian Confederation of Trade Unions has organised a string of protests today, on Tuesday, mainly affecting public transport services, BBN/LETA reported, referring to Äripäev.

In Tallinn the strike was scheduled to take place between 10.15 and 11.15 with participation of bus drivers from Tallinn Bus Company and Trammi- and Trollipark, the trade union head Peep Peterson informed.

As to Peterson, approximately 1,000 workers will be protesting against the new employment contract act that will notably weaken the position of employees. Among others, trade unions demand that the employers agree to new redundancy and unemployment insurance benefits.

"Our objective is not to cause damages to employers, but since the government is leaning towards employers in terms of enforcing the new employment contract act, we have no choice," said Harri Taliga, the head of ECUTU.

In Narva, bus drivers will be on strike from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m., road maintenance stated the intention to join the strike.

In Tartu the strike will last the whole day while in West Estonia mainly signatures will be collected to develop a petition.
