BC, Vilnius, 03.11.2017.Print version
Equal direct payments to farmers across the European Union is a long-term ambition of the bloc, but it is not clear yet when this could be achieved, EU Budget Commissioner Guenther Oettinger said in Vilnius on November 2nd, informs LETA/BNS.

"It is a long-term ambition to bring new member states and their
farming to the average of our EU funding. To have real and fair competition,
there has to be an equal funding for our all European farmers," the
commissioner told reporters.
"The direction is clear, the timing is open. We are going into this
direction step by step," he added,
Lithuanian farmers began to receive direct payments under the Common
Agricultural Policy (CAP) after the country joined the EU in 2004, but these
payments are much lower than those to their Western European counterparts.
Lithuania is to receive 5.07 billion euros under the CAP in 2014-2020,
including EUR 3.394 billion for direct payments.
