Government in Latvia approves allocating EUR 14.87 mln for farmers affected by floods

BC, Riga, 24.10.2017.Print version
The government of Latvia on October 24th approved allocating EUR 14.87 million from the government's emergency funds to compensate farmers for damage caused by floods this past August and September, the Cabinet of Ministers informed LETA.

According to the Agriculture Ministry, farmers who had their crops, vegetables, hay, or apiaries damaged by floods had to apply by October 2 to have their farms inspected by Latvian Rural Advisory and Training Center or Rural Support Service experts. Farms growing buckwheat and corn were allowed to file their applications by October 15.

The Rural Advisory and Training Center and Rural Support Service experts inspected a total of 2,933 farms. The government's compensation payments are based on the experts' findings, who concluded that farmers' total losses had amounted to EUR 20,538,016.

However, taking into consideration the limited fiscal space in this year's budget, the government can compensate 71.9% of farmers' actual losses, therefore the total compensation amount is EUR 14.87 million.
