Corruption Prevention Bureau uncovers possible corruption in Riga Eastern Hospital

BC, Riga, 15.09.2017.Print version
The Corruption Prevention Bureau (KNAB) has opened a criminal probe into a suspected corruption crime in Riga Eastern Clinical University Hospital (Riga Eastern Hospital), information obtained by LETA suggests.

KNAB has detained at least one person in connection with the corruption case.

Oskars Sneiders, a spokesman for the Health Ministry, told LETA that the ministry would not comment on the case for now as it has not yet received official information from KNAB.

Aija Lietina, a spokeswoman for Riga Eastern Hospital, confirmed that, according to information at the hospital’s disposal, KNAB has been conducting investigative activities concerning the hospital. The hospital’s administration would provide all the necessary support to KNAB, but would not give any more details for now.

This is not the first case of KNAB turning its attention to this hospital. In April this year, the prosecutor’s office sent to Riga City Vidzeme District Court a criminal case, investigated by KNAB, in which six employees of Riga Eastern Hospital have been charged with graft. They have been accused of taking bribes from patients for helping them jump the lines at the hospital’s diagnostics center.

The court is due to start hearing this case in March 2018.
