Latgales Bekons ASF-affected farm to receive EUR 211,000 in compensation

In relation to African swine fever (ASF) outbreak in Latgales Bekons pig farm, EUR 211,000 will be paid in compensations from contingency funds, the Latvian government decision on July 18th, informs LETA.

The money will be used for liquidating 5,818 pigs and their bodies, covering expenses of transportation and services of Grow Energy company that will carry this out.

 

As reported, African swine fever has been detected at the joint-stock Latvian ham and bacon producer Latvijas Bekons. The farm itself holds approximately 6,000 pigs and is located in southeastern Daugavpils district.

 

According to Firmas.lv business database, Latgales Bekons last year generated EUR 1.676 million in sales, down 14% from a year ago, while the company’s profit dropped more than four times to EUR 74,245. The company last year employed 69 people.
