Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 29th extended the Russian embargo on food imports from EU member states and other countries to the end of 2017, reports INTERFAX/LETA.

A decree posted on the Russian government's official website says that the import ban is being extended until December 31, 2017.

The decree authorizes the Russian government to propose changes in the timeframe of these measures.

On May 27, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that his government will propose extending the food import ban to the end of 2017.

On August 7, 2014, the Russian government put a one-year embargo on imports of most food products from the EU, the US, Australia, Canada and Norway in response to the sanctions these countries have imposed against Russia for its aggression in Ukraine. In 2015 the embargo was extended until August 5, 2016.
